TotalEnergies Receives Green Light for 3 GW Solar Projects in Spain

French oil company TotalEnergies has secured vital environmental permits from Spanish authorities for a groundbreaking solar project with an impressive production capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW), the company announced on Monday. This major milestone marks a significant step in TotalEnergies’ commitment to renewable energy and sustainability in the Spanish market.

The newly obtained permits pertain to an ambitious undertaking consisting of 48 solar plants strategically planned across the regions of Madrid, Murcia, and Aragon. These innovative solar facilities will boast an impressive capability of generating enough clean energy to satisfy the electricity demands of nearly 4 million people. Such an eco-friendly initiative will undoubtedly contribute to Spain’s ongoing efforts in achieving a greener and more sustainable energy landscape.

Specifically, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has given its enthusiastic approval for a diversified TotalEnergies portfolio of solar projects. This portfolio includes an astounding 1.9 GW capacity in the Community of Madrid, an additional 350 megawatts (MW) in the Murcia region, over 300 MW in Castilla-La Mancha, 263 MW in Andalusia, and approximately 150 MW in Aragon. The comprehensive geographic spread of these projects ensures that a substantial portion of Spain’s population will have access to renewable energy sources.

TotalEnergies’ CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, expressed his delight at the successful acquisition of the permits, describing it as “a big step forward” for the company’s ambitions in the Spanish market. Pouyanné highlighted TotalEnergies’ existing foothold in Spain, where the company currently serves two million residential and commercial electricity customers. This significant presence was solidified through the acquisition of EDP’s portfolio in the country in 2020, further establishing TotalEnergies as a major player in the region’s energy sector.

“For Spain, the development of these solar parks will make a major contribution to the country’s energy transition, as they will be able to power the equivalent of the population of the entire community of Madrid,” Pouyanné emphasized.

TotalEnergies’ ambitious solar projects are projected to commence operations as early as 2024, paving the way for rapid progress in Spain’s renewable energy goals. Once operational, these solar plants are anticipated to generate approximately 6,000 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean energy annually.

Moreover, the implementation of the 3 GW solar projects will contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions. Over their operational lifetime, the solar plants are expected to prevent approximately 50 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being released into the atmosphere. Such a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is crucial to combating climate change and fostering sustainable practices in the energy sector.

TotalEnergies’ CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, also pointed out the global implications of the company’s solar ambitions, stating, “For TotalEnergies, these projects will bring us closer to our goal of 100 GW of gross installed renewable capacity by 2030 worldwide.” This ambitious goal reflects the company’s dedication to spearheading the transition from conventional fossil fuels to renewable energy sources on a global scale.
