Alice Min Soo Chun, an inventor with a background in architecture, has always been fascinated by the idea that a simple fold can create structure. Growing up in Seoul, Korea and later in upstate New York, she would spend time with her mother learning the art of origami. This early exposure to the transformative power of folding would later inspire her innovative work in solar technology.

After studying Architecture at Penn State and earning her Masters at the University of Pennsylvania, Chun recognized the need for smarter, lighter, and more sustainable manufacturing. She began to experiment with the idea of sewing solar panels to fabric, envisioning a way to harness solar power using materials that were softer and more malleable than traditional solar panels.

Chun’s interest in clean energy and solar technology deepened when her son was diagnosed with asthma. Determined to make a positive impact on the environment and improve the health of her family, she embarked on creating solar lights as early prototypes. With the help of her students while teaching as a Professor of Architecture and Material Technology at Columbia University, Chun brought her vision to life.

By integrating solar panels into fabric, Chun was able to create solar-powered textiles that could generate electricity from sunlight. This groundbreaking innovation opened up a world of possibilities for harnessing renewable energy in practical and aesthetically pleasing ways.
